Young Adults Group

St Francis Catholic Church’s Young Adults Group (or “Bible and Beverage” as it is affectionately known) is a group of 18 – 35-year-olds in the parish who aim to grow together in community and faith.

The group was revived shortly after COVID, with younger parishioners seeking to meet other young Catholics after the isolation of lockdown. Starting with 3 attendees the group has grown exponentially, and we are currently a network of 35 parishioners (and always open to new members!).

“Bible and Beverage” provides a space for authentic faith-centred friendships and community in an increasingly online world.

Importantly, our meetings are centred on spiritual nourishment first – such as Mass, adoration, study of scripture, and prayer (the “Bible”) – and are always followed up with social events afterwards (the “Beverage”).

We currently meet at 19:30 in the church every 2nd Thursday of the month for Lectio Divina (or “Divine Reading”).
This is Bible study with a twist; a slow, contemplative, silent prayer with the upcoming Sunday’s Gospel reading in front of the Blessed Sacrament.

For most attendees this is a radical experience – Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, followed by 45 minutes in silence and away from all distractions; a time to let our hearts settle and converse with the Lord while we rest in His presence.

Afterwards, those who are comfortable are invited to share their thoughts about the Gospel and what Christ said to them in that silence.

Additionally, one of our parish priests (usually Fr Stephen) is always present to share their wisdom about the readings and field any tough questions that may come up. We then finish with Benediction.

Importantly, we always head over the road to our local Wetherspoon’s for a drink and fellowship afterwards to bring a lovely evening to a close.

We also strive to hold at least one social per month over and above the Thursday meetings.
In the past we have enjoyed bowling, mini-golf, group lunches, walks, picnics, pilgrimages, and our annual Summer Barbecue in the Presbytery Garden.

These socials are arranged via the Bible and Bev WhatsApp group, so please do contact the admin to get involved.

Lastly, we occasionally have a group of our members meet for a coffee after 10am Sunday Mass.

These meetups are often impromptu and dependent on whoever is present and free. We usually meet near the church steps. If nobody is around, why not ask other parishioners for a cuppa and a chat, this is how community is built!

We are always happy to welcome new members – wherever you are with your faith journey. Bible and Beverage is a perfect way to plug into the parish community and meet other young adults who encourage and support each other to answer the call to live an authentic Catholic life.
